Shoppers encouraged to hand back plastic packaging this weekend

Shoppers in Penzance are being encouraged to hand back plastic packaging at the supermarket tills this weekend, as part of a nationwide campaign.

Plastic Free Penzance and Plastic Free Marazion are joining communities across the UK for ‘Mass Unwrap’ events.

Organised as part of the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Communities campaign, the purpose of a Mass Unwrap is to show the high levels of plastic packaging being used and put pressure on supermarkets to make changes.

Community lead at Plastic Free Penzance Rachel Yates said: “We often get asked about excessive packaging in the supermarkets and what can we do about it. This is one way we, as shoppers, can make our voices heard. In just two hours it’s incredible how much packaging can be collected.

“The events are organised with the supermarkets and are designed not to cause disruption for checkout staff. They are a great way to raise awareness, showing how much of the plastic we take home isn’t actually needed and how much of it isn’t able to be recycled.”

Mass Unwraps are held over a two-hour period during which customers shop and pay as normal. When they move away from the till they can then visit a Mass Unwrap volunteer, who will help them take any unnecessary plastic packaging from their purchases and put it in a trolley for recycling or disposal. Counting up the items as they go volunteers will be gathering evidence to show the scale of wrapping used.

Community lead for Plastic Free Marazion Tamsin Woodhead added: “We are lucky to have very active Plastic Free Communities groups in the area which are all run by volunteers, and we have drafted in extra volunteers to help people unwrap their shopping on the day. This means we’ve been able to include most of the major supermarkets in the town and we thank those managers who have been happy to host us.”

Mass Unwraps will be held at:

Tesco, Branwell Lane: Saturday 9th March 11am – 1pm

Morrisons: Saturday 9th March 11am –1pm

Sainsbury’s: Sunday 10th March 11.30am – 1.30pm
