Firefighters on St Mary’s were mobilised this morning after a member of the public reported a boat on fire.

The Critical Control Centre received the call at 8.58am and both appliances from the island were immediately sent out.

The vessel attended was the Lyonesse Lady, a freight boat that runs between the islands owned by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company.

A Cornwall Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “Crews discovered that the fire located within the engine room of the cargo boat had been extinguished, prior to arrival.”

Firefighters remained on scene unloading cargo and monitoring temperatures, using a thermal imaging camera.
